Playing Cards

From above, the dealer

Glanced at my sad, sorry hand

All clubs and one ace of hearts

He seemed to understand

He slipped me the two of hearts

Love to balance out pain

I was so grateful

I could not complain

But after a while,

The game took a twist

My cards, held tightly

Somehow slipped from my fist

To the floor they scattered

And all that remained

Was the sad, sorry, ace

Crumpled and stained

I turned to the dealer

Begged for some aid

And to bury my heart

He gave an ace of spades
